Vltava (pol. Wełtawa, germ. Moldau) - river close to Lipno and Wikipedia:Vyšší Brod.

There is a dam in Lipno. There is a water once a year, when there are Czech Slalom Competition, first weekend of September or last weekend of August. Camping place "Pod hrazi", in Wikipedia:Vyšší Brod, below the lake, close to road 163.

It is a typical flood river, which flows through a forest. There are huge waves and stoppers. występują bardzo duże fale.

Warning: Vltava is a river, which flows through whole Czech Republic and there are lots of lowland sections. Following description concerns only WW part of Vltava, close to Lipno.

River sections

Vltava 2006 movie

Vltava is divided to two sections. First one is much easier and shorter then the other on. Offen these sections are paddled together.

Upper Vltava

Put-in: below natural kayaking course under the Lipno dam, close to the road 163 (on the right river bank), after villages Loucovice and Kaplicky,
Take-out: after the bridge, on right bank. This is a put-in for the lower section
Difficulty: class III
Length:
Time: 15-20 min

Close to the end - quite big stopper class III+ - go to the right,
Before the stopper big rock under water,
Afterwards big waves till the bridge, later flat part,

Lower Vltava

Bloody hand rapid

Put-in: on the rights bank after the bridge (take out of the upper section). It is also possible to start before papiernia or before the weir - you do not have to paddle through lakes,
Take-out: on the left bank, close to rails or a bit below. You can also paddle to lake in Vyssi Brod (to the dam), but there is no fun,
Difficulty: class III-IV (IV+/V-),

After the bridge at the end of upper section two lakes, connected with easy rapid,
At the end of second lake a weir (0.5 m height or more). Paddle on left, close to the bank,
Afterwards easy rapid, and later papiernia – big rapid with huge waves]]. On the left bank concrete pillars in the river. Paddle in the center, a bit on right,
Later a flat part and the weir (ca. 3 m height). Paddle on the right. Scout from right bank, possible portage on right or left. Watch out for the eddy on the right below the weir

After the weir long, big rapid called slide
After the slide big stopper on the right. Paddle in the center or left (or through the stopper in you want to have more fun!) ,
Bloody hand. A class V- rapid (if there is more water class IV+). Before it there is a big rock in the river (in the center), before which you should take out for scouting. Scouting from right of left, portage on left. Possible safety on the right. Paddling through the "S" on the right, the to the left. Watch out for the huge hydraulic in the middle of river before bloody hand rapid!

Devil's stairs – a few natural, high drops. Before: big rock in the river, after which there is a splitted tree. Start paddling on the left, then choose a way you like (left (chicken run), center, right (more fun))
